Researchers Have Found That The Ideal Age Gap Between You And Your Partner Can Make Your Relationship Last
As far as love and relationships go, age seems to be just a number, say some people. However, society seems to believe that two lovers should be separated by a set number of years, and researchers have even found the ideal gap between two lovers that increases their chances of longevity. In any relationship, we think that love, devotion, and kindness are the most important things, but it is also interesting to see how research looks at the ideal age gap.
This study has found that there is a magic number that helps us achieve the ever-lasting romance that we all desire.
Society has come up with a rule to define a boundary between two partners because the topic of what an acceptable age gap should be between two partners can be subjective and the discussion can last forever. According to this rule, a dating partner’s minimum age should be half their age plus seven.
According to this equation, if you are 30 years old, dating a 22-year-old would be acceptable, but dating a 21-year-old would be unacceptable.
In spite of this, it seems to me that a wider age gap becomes acceptable as we grow older. According to this equation, a 60-year-old can date a 38-year-old even if the gap in their ages is 22 years, but an 8-year gap between a 28-year-old and a 20-year-old isn’t acceptable.
The equation also doesn’t seem to work with time. When Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones first got married in 2000, their 25-year gap wasn’t acceptable, since she was 30 and he was 55. However, as of 2022, he will be 77 and she will be 52, and this seems to fit into this equation..

What Did The Study Find?
Emory University conducted a study involving 3,000 people and found that the bigger the age gap, the greater the risk of breakup.
As a result of the survey, it was found that:
- An age gap of five years has an 18% higher chance of splitting than a similar gap of five years
- Couples with a 10-year age gap have a 39% increased chance of splitting up
- Couples who have a 20-year age gap have a 95% higher chance of splitting than those who have the same age gap
As proof, consider Sylvester Stallone’s 22-year gap with Jennifer Flavin, or Madonna’s four-year breakup with her 35-year-old boyfriend.
Ā It’s not surprising that Leonardo DiCaprio’s relationships haven’t lasted long, as he tends to date women much younger than him. After 4 years together, the actor broke up with his 22-year-old girlfriend Camila Morrone.
He also had relationships with model Nina Agdal, 17 years his junior, and model Bar Rafaeli, 10 years his junior, but neither lasted.
This Is The Ideal Age Gap
According to this study, if we want to have a long-lasting romantic relationship, minimizing the age gap is crucial. Based on the data, a 1-year age gap is an ideal gap for a relationship that will survive since only 3% of these couples will end their relationship.
Mark Zuckerberg, born in 1984, and Priscilla Chan, born in 1985, who have been married for 10 years, prove this theory to be true.
After 26 years of marriage, Kelly Ripa, born 1970, and Mark Consuelos, born 1971, are still going strong.
Considering that Leonardo DiCaprio was born in 1974, his ideal partner shouldn’t be born before 1973 or after 1975. According to this study, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, or Tyra Banks are all single stars born between 1975 and 1973 who have an optimal age difference with DiCaprio that may make the relationship more successful.
Is a one-year age gap the ideal gap? Or do you think age shouldn’t matter in a relationship?
