Mental health: What Are The Signs That You Need Help?
A psychologist, Debasmita Sinha, says that time constraints, financial constraints, or misinformation can influence a person’s decision to consult a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist.
In recent years, many celebrities and sportspeople have shared their battles with mental health, but it is still not as widely discussed as physical health.
Deeksha Athwani, consultant clinical psychologist at Fortis Mulund, concurred, and said that this is the result of major misconceptions surrounding mental health, such as the perception that therapy is only for those with mental illnesses or that those seeking therapy are too weak to handle their problems themselves.
Why is it stigmatized to seek help?
Taking the first step towards managing mental health can be challenging for those who have never sought professional help. As mental health problems aren’t well known like physical ones, seeking help isn’t an easy task.

People often doubt whether they are making a huge deal out of a minor problem. They may wonder if; ‘am I making a big deal out of a minor issue?’, ‘is this really a problem?’ or ‘what will my family/friends think if they know I am in therapy??? “It is also possible to be influenced by misinformation, time constraints, and tight finances when deciding whether or not to consult a psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or another professional,” said Debasmita Sinha, clinical director at Manah Wellness, a psychologist.
Which warning signs should you look out for?
Bogged down feelings are common in life at times. Nevertheless, if this feeling persists, you may also experience “sadness, emptyness, hopelessness, irritability, frustration, anger for no apparent reason, a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities,” and problems sleeping, exhaustion, poor appetite, unexplained weight gain or loss, agitation, restlessness, poor cognitive health, self-blame, suicidal thoughts, unexplained problems such back pain or headaches, seek professional help,” stressed Dr Sonal Anand, psychiatrist.
She added that excessive use of smoking, alcohol, or drugs could also be indicators of hidden depression.
Your senses can sometimes cause confusion and make you feel disconnected from reality. When one is suffering from psychosis, one may even experience hallucinations and delusions. It is important that you do not ignore these symptoms and seek help from an expert who can guide you to overcoming the issue,” said Dr Anand.
A good rule of thumb is to detect issues early so you can manage them better and speed up the recovery process, even if they aren’t “disruptive enough to interfere with your daily functioning or your professional responsibilities”. “Despite this, they do indicate that something needs to be addressed. Another sign you shouldn’t overlook is difficulty coping with a difficult life event. In addition to cushioning the emotional shock, seeking professional assistance can prepare you for the distress that accompanyes these events,” Sinha explained.
