How Ayurveda’s Panchakarma Eliminates Long-Term Covid Effects

People who have been affected by long COVID might still be grappling with its effects even though the pandemic seems to be finally on the wane. A condition known as Long Covid is one in which you have recovered from COVID-19, but still suffer from some symptoms. Shortness of breath, mental fog, fatigue, palpitations, insomnia, gastric problems like bloating, acidity, irritable bowel movements, muscle weakness, and mobility problems are all possible symptoms.

When microbes enter the body, they cause toxicity, leading to an imbalance in the body’s doshas or bio-energies. Ayurveda as a holistic treatment can build immunity and strengthen the body greatly. With a weak immune system, we are more likely to contract infectious diseases, which is why Panchakarma and other Ayurveda treatments are used to prevent these diseases. Panchakarma is used as a preventative measure.

For patients who have tested negative for the virus, we recommend Panchakarma procedures to strengthen and fortify their bodies so that they can remain healthy for a long time. However, such procedures cannot be performed immediately upon recovery. The body must be stronger and have higher energy levels before we can perform Panchakarma. If you wish to undergo cleansing procedures like Panchakarma, you should wait until the body has regenerated its energy and has healed itself for up to two months. In addition, it is recommended that a person wait two or three months before undergoing Panchakarma, after undergoing surgery or undergoing some serious illness. Meanwhile, Ayurvedic treatments are available for insomnia, anxiety, stress-related disorders, and immune boosting.

It depends on the severity of the long-term Covid symptoms, as well as the individual treatment protocol. In such cases, the doctor will determine whether the patient is sufficiently prepared to undergo a single Karmas procedure or multiple Karmas.

A lot of long Covid patients have respiratory problems, but also gastrointestinal (GI) tract issues, heart disease, neurological conditions, and brain and kidney problems. Some people lose their sense of smell, taste, hearing, and vision for a longer period of time as a result of Covid, which affects the sense organs. The strong treatments we use to combat Covid have caused severe conditions in our patients besides long Covid.

Despite the health benefits of Panchakarma, it is imperative that energy levels are checked before starting the treatment as it involves a tiring process that depletes energy.

The detoxification phase of Panchakarma procedures is important because these disease-causing microbes bring a lot of toxins into the body, and if they stay in the body, we cannot treat the underlying conditions. A medicated ghee drink, known as Snehapanam, is consumed during the treatment to loosen toxins and facilitate expulsion. The panchakarma routines will not be carried out on patients with long Covid; doctors will prescribe a procedure tailored to the patient’s condition.

When people are suffering from arthritis, degeneration of muscles, or skin lesions, Vasti or enema is prescribed. The expulsion of this heals neurological disorders and the other ailments mentioned. This is not colon cleansing, but administering medicine to the colon and rectum.

A nasal treatment, also known as Nasya, is used to treat sensory organ problems, such as loss of smell, taste, sight, hearing, or even memory loss. Vamanam and Virechanam, which enhance detoxification in addition to Nasya, are administered as well.

As part of the Panchakarma procedure, patients are also given secondary treatments or Upakarmas. Those with Long Covid conditions that affect the eyes and ears are treated with Tharpanam and Karnapuranam, respectively. In addition to correcting Vata, Pitta, and Kapha imbalances, treatments like Njavara Kizhi and Pizhichil help rejuvenate the body as well.

The process of panchakarma is divided into three stages: preparation, elimination, and rejuvenation. We prescribe specific foods and medicines to restore a person’s health and vitality.

It is also possible to improve the immune system with herbal medications. As a result of these prescribed herbal medicines, those with respiratory issues are able to improve their lung capacity and remove excess phlegm and fibroids. For those with gastrointestinal issues, these medicines are also beneficial.

When a Panchakarma course is completed, it is also recommended that the body is regularly strengthened with herbal preparations to prevent COVID and other infectious diseases. Patients may be prescribed the medication for three to six months, and in cases where they are weak, it may be prescribed for a year as well.
