Here Are 10 Amazing Movies With Epic Bad Endings

A good movie isn’t always easy to make. Far too often, we flock to the theaters for a film that has a strong premise but doesn’t quite deliver. Occasionally, we are left scratching our heads as we leave the theater after watching a totally enjoyable flick…and then a movie falls apart just before the closing credits. Here are a few films that keep us on edge until the end.

Citizen Kane

There is no doubt that Citizen Kane is one of the greatest films ever made due to its achievements in film-making and its twist at the end – but was it a twist at all? We were a little disappointed when Orson Welles’ lead character, Kane, mysteriously whispered the name “rosebud” on his deathbed only to find out it was the name of his childhood sled.

La La Land

It all started with singing. It started with dancing. It all ended with love. Then Damien Chazelle had to choose his career over the couple’s swoon-worthy relationship.

Vanilla Sky

In the past, this “it’s only a dream” concept has been done…and better than it’s ever been. In Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz all put in stellar performances, but it ended with an anticlimatic conversation with an employee of tech support.

Birdbox

In spite of the fact that Birdbox was not a great movie to begin with, there’s no denying that it had a major pop culture impact. Sandra Bullock’s character’s blindfolds stayed on until her kids and she hit the rapids in the river. Those blindfolds would never stay on. Despite the fact that it’s an entirely improbable scenario, the entire story leads to a school for the blind, where the survivors take shelter with other survivors, but there is no resolution to the problem in the end. As a result, it seems a bit pointless.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

In this robotic riff on Pinocchio, Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick gave us what could have been the cinematic event of the decade…if not for the ending. A statue of the blue fairy can turn Haley Joel Osment’s character into a boy if he waits long enough. It is thousands of years later that he is thawed out by aliens who are able to clone his adoptive mother so they can spend one last day together. We were left scratching our heads after the uneventful end to the meeting.

Lucy

A whip-smart Scarlett Johansson soaking up tons of knowledge while kicking butt is an enjoyable experience. As her character unlocks 100% of her brain capacity, things start to get bizarre…literally disappearing into thin air once she’s one with the world. Besides, she gives her professor friend (Morgan Freeman) a flash drive that she believes holds all of the universe’s secrets. That’s as bizarre as it sounds.

The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water may have won Best Picture, but it ends up being just a gender-reversed version of Splash. This 2017 drama might’ve taken home Best Picture, but it has a totally unoriginal ending.

War of the Worlds

After everything wraps up, there is a gaping plot hole in this sci-fi action movie. How could advanced beings harvesting humans for fertilization not consider the billions of germs on our planet? Have you ever been on a crowded subway during the flu season?

Avengers: Infinity War

If Marvel fans freak over this inclusion, backlash will ensue. Our favorite heroes would have been more impactful if the studio behind these movies hadn’t already announced an entire slate of films featuring those same characters in the future. When we know Black Panther 2 is coming our way, why should we shed a tear over T ‘Challa’s death? By some loophole in the next Avengers movie, most (if not all) of these heroes will be restored to their former glory.

Titanic

The Best Picture winner will always hold our hearts, but there are two major complaints about it. The first is the often-debated door problem. It’s clear Jack could’ve fit on that door (or they could’ve switched at the very least!) The second, which many people have also mentioned, is when Rose drops the necklace into the ocean at the end of the film. Remember how she casually throws that necklace overboard as if it wouldn’t have any value to her family? The search for that necklace was the catalyst for this entire story. As soon as you consider those two obvious factors, you cannot help but look at Rose differently.
