From Tata Altroz to Maruti Baleno CNG, here are 5 upcoming CNG vehicles to beat high fuel prices

Due to the lack of EV infrastructure in India, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles offer an alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles that are skyrocketing in prices daily. A range of new cars are now available with a factory-fitted CNG kit, making CNG cars more affordable and easier to maintain than ICE cars. In the beginning, CNG had only been available to public transport vehicles, like autorickshaws, but now the gas can also be used to power cars.
These are the five most anticipated CNG cars launching in India in the next few years.
Altroz CNG from Tata
The CNG-powered Altroz could be launched soon by Tata Motors after the Automatic variant was recently launched. Recently, the Altroz CNG test mule was spotted in the country, hinting that the launch is quickly approaching.
With the CNG kit, the vehicle will be equipped with a 1.2-liter, naturally aspirated, three-cylinder petrol engine that currently produces 86 bhp and 113 Nm. When running on CNG, the power and torque outputs will drop to 72 horsepower and 95 Nm, respectively. Only a 5-speed manual transmission is available.
Compared to its petrol and diesel counterparts, the Altroz CNG does not have any changes to its exterior design.
It comes with a touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, wireless charging, and height-adjustable seats. It is Tata’s commitment to safety that has led to its inclusion of ISOFIX Child Seat anchors, dual airbags, rear parking sensors with cameras, ABS EBD, and dual airbags in front. There are three powertrain options available for the Tata Altroz, including a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, as well as a 1.5-litre diesel engine that generates 90 bhp and 200 nm of torque.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG
A 1.2 L NA Petrol engine powering the Baleno CNG will produce 89 PS of maximum power and 113 Nm of peak torque. With CNG, power and torque will likely be reduced to 77 PS and 98.5 Nm.
A manual transmission will likely be offered only on the CNG variant of the 2022 Baleno, which is available with both manual and automatic transmission options. It is expected that the new Baleno CNG will achieve an efficiency of around 30km/kg.
Currently, the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno is priced between Rs 6.35 lakh and Rs 9.49 lakh. CNG variants of the hatchback, on the other hand, may start at around Rs 8.4 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Punch CNG
Tata Punch is another micro SUV on the list. The Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG were launched by Tata Motors in February 2022, and the Punch CNG is expected to follow soon.
In the Tata Punch, a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine powers the front wheels. A maximum torque of 113 Nm and 86 bhp are produced by this engine at 3300 RPM. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission as standard and an automatic transmission as an option. CNG will likely reduce the power and torque output to 72 bhp and 95 Nm with the addition of CNG.
With punch, you get projector headlights, LED headlights, LED taillights, 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a semi-digital instrument cluster (with a 7-inch MID), a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a push-button start/stop, a rear parking camera, automatic climate control, a cooled glove box, and puddle lamps.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG
The new Brezza was launched by Maruti Suzuki for the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). In the manual and automatic transmissions, the car is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine rated at 20.15 kmpl and 19.80 kmpl respectively. Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce a CNG variant soon to make it even more efficient.
It is expected that the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza CNG will have a 1.5L Petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit. 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque are produced by this Petrol engine. As for the SUV’s power, in CNG mode, it can produce 91 bhp and 122 Nm.
Kia Carens CNG
Indian roads were recently spotted testing the Kia Carens CNG. Along with the existing petrol and diesel engines, Carens will have a third fuel option when launched.
Three engine options are available for the Kia Carens, two petrol and one diesel. The car has a 1.5-liter NA petrol engine with 113 horsepower, a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine with 138 horsepower, a 7-speed DCT, and a 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 113 horsepower.
Kia Carens CNG will be available only with the 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. While power and torque figures are likely to remain lower, they will be comparable with those of the petrol-only model. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG will compete with the Kia Carens when it is launched.
